On February 13, 2013, 2025, the LCL in partnership with the ELCA officially launched a psychosocial project in Totota, Bong County in response to the December 2023 Totota Gas Tanker Explosion.
The initiative seeks to help address the devastating impact of the tragic gas tanker explosion that occurred on December 26, 2023, which claimed the lives of over 130 individuals and left more than 127 survivors, 155 orphans and about 222 family members grappling with deep trauma and profound grief.
These individuals along with health workers and other local community dwellers continue to endure emotional and psychological distress, making the response effort very essential for healing and recovery.
Launching the project, LCL Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. G. Victor Padmore applauded the ELCA for its support to implement such milestone intervention.

The Totota Gas Tanker Explosion Response Project represents a critical step in alleviating the suffering of survivors and fostering community resilience.
Through strategic psychosocial interventions, rehabilitation support, and collaborative partnerships, this initiative will restore hope, rebuild lives, and ensure that affected individuals regain control of their lives and move forward with dignity.
The Lutheran Church in Liberia remains steadfast in its mission to bring healing and transformation to a community in need of healing through this project.
The launching ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Phebe Hospital Medical Director, Dr. Minnie Sankawulo-Ricks, Rev. Brain Palmer of the ELCA, local government authorities, the Liberia National Police, survivors and their families, the religious community and the media among others.
Various Schools are receiving Tuitions and fees for Orphans and Beneficiaries:
Various Schools received 100% payment of tuition and fees for beneficiaries (Orphans) enrolled at their Schools. The initiative demonstrates the LCL and its’ Partner (ELCA) full commitment to giving hope to affected Orphans and families of the Totota Gas explosion.
